I'd always wanted to make a drone machine that produces an actual note from a string and finally figured out how to do it. This is a dowel mounted onto a piece of wood, and has a pickup mounted right over the string. It uses an E-Bow to drone, or the string can be directly plucked. There's a golf tee at one end that rolls on the string to give it a grinding noise and a tuning peg to change the note. Video here.
